Ten things you should know about new HPCL CMD MK Surana

THE government on February 17 appointed MK Surana as the new chairman and managing director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), the nation's third-largest oil marketing PSU. Here are five things about the new CMD, who will succeed Nishi Vasudeva on her retirement at the end of March
"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas for appointment of M K Surana... as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), HPCL," a Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) order said.
Here are ten things you should know about Surana...

Profile: Surana, 54, is currently the chief executive officer of Prize Petroleum Co, the upstream oil exploration arm of HPCL
Pay package: His pay scale will be Rs 80,000-1,25,000 for a period of five years from the date of his assumption of charge of the post on or after April 1, 2016, or till the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.
Top job: Surana was selected for the top job at HPCL by government headhunter Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) in October last year after it interviewed a dozen candidates, including HPCL director (HR) P.K. Joshi and Khaleel Rahim, chairman of State Trading Corporation of India.
Peers: Four HPCL executive directors - S.P. Gupta, G.S. Ganesh, S. Jeyakrishnan and Ajit Singh - were the other candidates interviewed. Surana had not appeared for the interview then.
Engineer par excellence: A mechanical engineer, he is a refineries man and had served as the General Manager of Projects for Vishaka Refinery of HPCL.
Term: He will get a five-year term which can be extended up to his retirement age of 60 years in April 2022.
Career: Surana, a mechanical engineer with a Master degree in Financial Management appointed as CEO of Prize Petroleum (a wholly owned subsidiary and upstream arm of HPCL) in Sept. 2012.
Experience: Surana has joined HPCL in 1982 and prior to his appointment as CEO Prize Petroleum, he has held key assignments at Mumbai Refinery, Vizag Refinery and Corporate Functions of HPCL including GM Operations and GM Projects at HPCL Refineries.
Backbone: He was a Core Team Member for Corporate vide ERP implementation in HPCL which now forms the backbone of all business transactions at HPCL.
Man of all weather: In his illustrious career spreading over three decades in petroleum industry , Surana has been closely involved in strategy formulation, business process engineering, major projects Implementation, refinery operations, corporate wide ERP implementation, acquisition and management of upstream assets etc.
