IN A significant move for the state-owned power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has partnered with Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (Midhani) and Hindustan Shipyards Limited (HSL) to bid for the P-75 I submarine project...
of the Indian Navy.
The development came a day after the government called a mega meeting with the industry leaders to promote its Make in India initiative
"The consortium will jointly stake claim with the ministry of defence for being considered as a prospective bidder for the proposed P-75 I project of the Indian Navy for building six submarines at an Indian shipyard," BHEL said in a statement.
Project-75 India (P-75 I) aims at building six submarines for the Indian Navy to plug gaps in the submarine fleet. The estimated cost of the project is $11.10 billion.
The MoU for the upcoming venture was signed between BHEL, Midhani and HSL on December 26.
"BHEL has a large infrastructure, including dedicated engineering, research and development and manufacturing facilities at several locations to manufacture various types of equipment and provide complete services to meet the requirements of the Indian defence sector," the Maharatna company said.
The PSU major has been on an expansion drive and today has references in over seventy six countries in six continents.
BHEL’s global reference include the entire gamut of its products and systems such as power plants (thermal, gas and hydro), turbines, generators, sub-stations, transformers, motors, photo voltaic modules, to name a few.
Today, with 20,000 MW per annum capacity for power plant equipment manufacturing, BHEL's mammoth size of operations is evident from its widespread network of 17 manufacturing units and eight overseas offices, six joint ventures.
BHEL has 57 percent share in India's total installed capacity and 65 percent share in the country's total generation from thermal utility sets (coal based) as of March 31, 2014.
